Did You Know?
Chiropractic care is highly advantageous in helping address hip pain. This is done by addressing mechanics of movement. This encompasses how your joints, muscles, and spine are working together—especially if the pain is related to alignment, movement patterns, and pinched nerves. So how does this help with hip pain?:
1. Helping joint alignment
Adjustments can (manual or instrument-assisted) improve alignment in the hips, pelvis, and lower spine. If your hip pain is linked to misalignment in the pelvis or lower back, restoring proper positioning can reduce stress on the hip joint. Think of it like a car where the alignment is not correct. This will cause tires to wear unevenly and eventually problems with the front end of your car. With your joints misaligned this will cause inflammation, pain and eventually arthritis. The longer you wait to get it corrected the further the problem progresses. You could take meds, use ice or heat and try to exercise it BUT if the joint is twisted or out of proper alignment it will never heal properly
2. Restoring and/or Increasing mobility
Hip pain is often tied to stiffness or restricted motion. Adjustments and mobilization techniques can increase range of motion in the hip and surrounding joints, making movement smoother and less painful.
3. Reducing muscle/tendon tension
Tight muscles—like the hip flexors, glutes, or piriformis—can contribute to discomfort. Chiropractors often use soft tissue therapies (myofascial release, stretching, trigger point work, graston therapy) to reduce fascia tension, relax muscles and relieve pressure. Cold laser therapy is another effective means to support this.
4. Addressing related spine issues
Sometimes hip pain isn’t purely a hip problem. Conditions like nerve irritation( pinched ) in the lower back (lumbar spine) can refer to pain in the hip area. Chiropractic adjustments can help relieve that nerve pressure. In addition some people have knee pain. After doing all of the orthopedic testing of the knee and range of motion studies you often find the knee pain is referred from a hip problem.
5. Chiropractic and also help conditions like:
Chiropractic can also be helpful for:
- Sciatica ( pain, weakness, numbness or tingling from the back down to the foot )
- Hip bursitis
- Osteoarthritis
- Sacroiliac joint dysfunction
6. Instructions for specific exercises and posture
I also give corrective exercises and posture advice to strengthen supporting muscles and prevent the pain from coming back. This could be specific exercises based on a person’s employment/activity of daily living. Sitting long periods of time can compress the low back and shorten the hip flexors therefore restriction in hip range of motion.
7. Sometimes your hip pain is caused by other things.
For example :
- fractures
- severe arthritis
- labral tears
- infections
If this is the case your Chiropractor will identify those by ordering special imaging or testing and refer you to the proper specialist.
Bottom line
Chiropractic care can be very effective for hip pain caused by mechanical issues—like stiffness, misalignment, muscle imbalance as well as pinched nerves. Chiropractic adjustments are the best as part of a broader plan that also may include movement and strengthening.
