As defined by the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians, a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician (CCSP) is a licensed chiropractor who has completed specialized postgraduate training in sports medicine, focusing on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of athletic injuries. They are experts in optimizing athletic performance, managing musculoskeletal injuries, and providing on-field care for athletes at all levels.
Doctors of Chiropractic help people feel and move better, and for athletes, that can mean the difference between playing their best and being sidelined. Sports chiropractors help athletes perform at their highest level, reduce risk of injury, and reduce recovery time from injuries.
Though I no longer pursue the use of my CCSP certification outside of the clinic, a day does not go by where I am able to use the training I received over 35 years ago within the clinic. Like athletes, everyday people need the ability to move better and perform better, and this can be accomplished by adjustments to the spine as well as any other joint that has restrictions in its normal movement patterns.
Let’s use an example. Take a person’s knee with a pain complaint. Evaluation shows restriction in movement and pain, maybe some inflammation as well. There may be some tenderness along the joint lines as well as the tendon above and below the kneecap, and some positivity recognized in a couple of knee orthopedic tests. There could be an inability to fully flex the knee.
For treatment you could ice, stretch, exercise it, take painkillers or anti-inflammatories, maybe even end up with surgery. With all of this in mind, what if there is improper mechanics of the knee because of being out of proper alignment? All of those mentioned procedures may help, but none of them will correct the alignment of the knee and restore normal mechanics.
This is where adjusting of the joint or mobilization is so important. Once you restore better movement, then the inflammation reduces, the muscles relax, and there is much less stress on the joint.

Key Aspects of a CCSP:
- Specialized Expertise: CCSPs possess advanced training in sports injuries, rehabilitation, physical fitness, and emergency care, including concussions and fractures.
- Treatment Techniques: They use non-invasive methods, including spinal adjustments, extremity manipulation, soft tissue therapies, and corrective exercises.
- Performance Optimization: Beyond treating injuries, they help athletes improve performance through biomechanical analysis, strength training, and injury prevention strategies.
- Certification Requirements: To become a CCSP, a doctor must pass the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians exam after completing a minimum of 100 hours of postgraduate education, along with specific hands-on emergency training.
CCSPs differ from general chiropractors through their specialized, in-depth knowledge of sports-related injuries and their ability to work closely with other healthcare professionals, coaches, and trainers.
